Harry Kane late victor helps England beat Tunisia 2-1

  • Marcus Rashford was all smiles upon his return to the England team's training

England avoided an early stumble at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation on Monday, turning what looked appeared to be a draw against Tunisia in Group G into three points.

"We created a lot of clear-cut chances in the first half, as many as I remember, but we have to learn to be ruthless with those".

Neville, who played at three World Cups with England, says the anxiety that would have creeped in has now been avoided with Kane's vital victor in the Group G clash.

He added: "I was most proud of the way we kept playing even though the clock was running down".

Shot-stopper Jordan Pickford couldn't keep Ferjani Sassi's spot-kick out and England found themselves battling to regain their lead. Walker exerted no more pressure than one might leaning up against a bar in a pub, yet Ben Youssef went down and held his face as though he had just had a pint thrown in it. We were strong on set-plays all night.

South Africa 2010 started badly and never really got going for Fabio Capello's team before they were blown away by Germany in the round of 16, while Brazil 2014 was a disaster of two defeats and a draw against Costa Rica before finishing rock bottom of the group.

Kane scored the opening goal on the rebound after John Stones' header was kept out by Mouez Hassen. Harry's a top, top striker. Next up for Tunisia is Belgium on Saturday, while England takes on Panama on Sunday.

As Kane's record of 15 goals in 25 games can be rightly lauded, Sterling has scored only twice in 39 internationals and has not scored in his past 21.

"Maybe there was a bit of justice at the end", Kane said.

"We can enjoy tonight - and we hope everyone at home does".

It could all, of course, evaporate with a slide back to the bad old ways against Panama, but it feels and looks different for England this time. "We did the right things and made good decisions and were good value for the win", Southgate said. When you have very tall players it is very hard to counter them.

England's defence has also still not answered lingering questions about how it would cope when faced with an attack of the highest quality, which will eventually happen if they progress at this World Cup.

A brace from Harry Kane, including a very late victor, carried England to a dramatic victory over Tunisia tonight.

"Harry Maguire's potential is huge", said Southgate.

Alli had the first chance of the second half six minutes after the restart as his header was scooped out by Ben Mustapha.
