Bailiff said that, from all indications, all proper procedures were followed, but they will be reviewed.

Kansas City police spokesman Zac Blair said officers were speaking with witnesses about how the shooting happened.

Both officers are deputies with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office. Kelli Bailiff said the suspect also was wounded in the shooting late Friday morning.

The suspect is undergoing surgery, but his condition was not released.

The deputy who was killed was identified as Patrick Rohrer, 35, who had been with the department for seven years, officials said.

Police said at about 5 p.m. officers were called to the scene where two men were fighting over a golf cart and a gun.

One Kansas sheriff deputy is dead and another is in critical condition after a shooting near a courthouse in Kansas City, Kansas, on Friday.

When they pulled into a parking lot outside the county courthouse, the deputies were "overcome", Bailiff said.

A suspect was reportedly shot during the incident and taken to an area hospital. In the other incident, a standoff ended when a sword-wielding woman who fled from police later was shot after attempts to negotiate peacefully proved unsuccessful.

Bailiff said investigators do not believe the public is in any danger.

Kansas City, Kansas, Mayor Dave Alvey spoke Saturday morning, thanking a laundry list of law enforcement entities for their help in responding to the shooting, calling it "a heroic act", as well as the staff of the University of Kansas Hospital.

"We gather here today with so many emotions coursing through our guts", Alvey said, noting that some of those are "feelings of anger and revenge toward the assailant".

Local news outlets are reporting that the shooting occurred about 11:30 a.m. Friday.

He's also been charged with murder, assault and armed criminal action in a December 2017 shooting in Kansas City, Missouri.

Few details have been released about the shootings, including the victims' names.
