  • EastEnders star Leslie Grantham dies aged 71

His character, "Dirty" Den Watts was central to several iconic EastEnders storylines, including getting his daughter's best friend pregnant at 16, being assassinated by a crook hiding behind a bunch of daffodils in 1989.

Outside "EastEnders", Grantham performed onstage, hosted a TV game show, wrote a children's novel and appeared in a television series in Bulgaria.

Grantham's representative said in a statement that the former EastEnders star died on Friday.

Tracy-Ann, who played Den's second wife Chrissie Watts, tweeted: "Really sorry to heart about Leslie Grantham".

He enjoyed two popular spells in the BBC soap, with more than 30 million viewers tuning in to watch a 1986 Christmas Day episode in which his character served divorce papers to his onscreen wife, Angie.

Grantham's life was not without controversy. He had been living in Bulgaria but returned to the United Kingdom for hospital treatment.

A spokesperson for Grantham's family said: "We formally announce the loss of Leslie Grantham, who passed away at 10.20am on the morning of Friday 15th June 2018".

His representative said in a statement that Grantham's "ex-wife and sons have asked for their privacy to be respected at this hard time, and for there to be no approaches to them for information or comment".

Den returned in the early 2000s after being supposedly killed off in 1989, before leaving for good in 2005.

Kathy Beale actress Gillian Taylforth said: "I'm deeply saddened to hear the very sad news".

According to The Sun, the screen star had been visited in hospital by close friends in the industry.

And in 2004 he was revealed to have taken part in webcam sex sessions from his EastEnders dressing room at Elstree Studios.

"He was a wonderful and special actor, witty and very talented".
