Lava from Hawaii's Kilauea volcano has destroyed about 600 to 700 homes since it began flowing early last month and there's no sign of it stopping anytime soon, officials said Monday.

A small explosion at the summit of Hawaii's erupting Kilauea Volcano on Sunday (Jun 10) sent ash spewing into the air, creating a driving hazard for roads on parts of the Big Island, the US Geological Survey said.

The lava is "enough to cover Manhattan 6.5 feet deep" and fill 11.3 million average dump trucks, it said.

A small explosion on the summit of Kilauea volcano has triggered an natural disaster but there are no reports of damage.

Scientists say the blasts happened Monday, including one after a magnitude-5.4 natural disaster.

Scientists warn against venturing too close to lava hitting water, saying it could expose people to dangers from flying debris.

"I swear to you we're going to do this", he said, according to county spokeswoman Janet Snyder. This activity continues to feed the fast-moving channelized flow that is entering the ocean at Kapoho.

Latest updates from USGS at 09:32 pm BST said: "A line of closely spaced vents at Fissure 8 are continuing to erupt producing fountains reaching heights up to 160 feet, just higher than the spatter cone around them".

Residents should avoid the resulting laze plume. Mayor Kim's home was also destroyed by the volcano.

As well as the hundreds of homes lost, Kilauea has destroyed countless other buildings, forced thousands to flee their homes, and engulfed massive expanses of land.

Over the last five weeks, 24 fissures have opened in and near the Leilani Estates community of about 750 homes on lots of at least one acre.
