  • Andrew Garfield attends the 72nd Annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall

Its major award was Best Revival, meaning that Tony Kushner got to speak, both urging voters to heal our democracy, and wishing a happy birthday to Judy Garland.

But musical Mean Girls, based on the 2004 film, went away empty-handed after receiving 12 nominations. However, "Carousel" choreographer Justin Peck won the Tony, and cast member Lindsay Mendez won the the Tony for best supporting actress.

Garfield dedicated the award, his first Tony, to the LGBTQ community, for a "spirit that says no to oppression".

The intimate show, "Springsteen on Broadway" - or as De Niro referred to it, "Jersey Boy" - features the Boss performing his music and sharing stories from his 2016 autobiography "Born to Run". Other than Best Musical, the winners were David Cromer for direction, Itamar Moses for book, Jamshied Sharifi for orchestrations, Tyler Micoleau for lighting, Kai Harada for sound design, and three acting awards: Ari'el Stachel for Featured Actor, Tony Shalhoub for Leading actor, and Katrina Lenk for Leading Actress in a Musical.

LIndsay Mendez, who won the Tony for best featured actresses in a musical for Carousel, said in her acceptance speech, "When I moved to NY, I was told to change my last name from Mendez to Matthews or I wouldn't work".

In a paean to the LGBT community, actor Andrew Garfield encouraged the audience at the 72nd annual Tony Awards to "bake a cake for everyone who wants a cake to be baked". "May we, their descendants, never lose sight of what they taught us", he said.

Lane's co-star Garfield won for his work as Prior Walter; the original Prior, Stephen Spinella, won Best Featured Actor in a Play for Millennium Approaches in 1993 and Best Leading Actor in a Play for Perestroika the following season.

Co-hosts Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles kicked the show off with a self-parodying duet on piano for all the losers out there - including them.

"Look at the man who is in the White House right now".

Bruce Springsteen, the recipient of a special Tony Award and perhaps the most famous name inside Radio City Music Hall, was introduced by his friend Billy Joel. Further uptown, a deep roster of stars made appearances at DKC/O&M's annual bash at the Carlyle Hotel, which included famed composer and lifetime achievement honoree Andrew Lloyd Webber manning the turntables for a so-called "Disco Lloyd Webber". The revival of Angels in America had 11 and the two-part play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child had 10. To all artists out there, she said: "Just be your true self and the world will take note".

Second Best Triple Crown: Glenda Jackson was an actress and quit her day job to be a member of Parliament and then returned to Broadway in Edward Albee's Three Tall Women, for which she won the Tony Award. Viewership spiked in 2016 due to "Hamilton, " only to drop sharply past year.
