G7 countries agree to 'ambitious' communique despite global trade differences: Trudeau

"Russia should be in this meeting", Trump said.

"The European Union is brutal to the United States".

In response, Canada, Mexico and the European Union said they were putting in place their own retaliatory measures. "When I'm telling them, they're smiling at me".

"You know, the two presidents discussed the necessity of holding such a meeting in their last telephone call".

But, he said, the USA could no longer tolerate "brutal" deals, even threatening to tear up the North American Free Trade Agreement if he didn't get his way. Macron said Thursday on Twitter, "The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be".

The president says at the Group of Seven summit: "If they retaliate, they're making a mistake". That's the way it should be. "In fact, I congratulate the leaders of other countries for so crazily being able to make these trade deals that were so good for their countries and so bad for the United States".

"I did suggest it ..."

Trump's utopian idea was greeted with scepticism- "Good luck".

Macron, for example, noted that under European Union rules France now has open borders with Britain and Germany and runs trade deficits with both - far from Trump's vision of "reciprocal" balanced trade.

At his news conference, Mr.Trump again called for Russian Federation to reinstated to the G7, a suggestion rejected by all the leaders, expect Italy's new populist Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

Trump says he will depart shortly for Singapore on a "mission of peace". "And it's going to stop". "It is going to stop or we are going to stop trading with them".

He answered questions from just the small group, or "pool", of reporters who travel with him, not the much larger universe of reporters who cover the White House on a daily basis and would attend a less hastily arranged question-and-answer session.

And at the same time, the U.S. president seems more at home with autocrats than with Washington's traditional allies.

Trump, who railed against globalization in his election campaign, said he wanted all G7 nations to remove any tariffs, subsidies and other trade barriers.

"The United States has been taken advantage of for decades and decades", he continued, describing America as a "piggy bank that everyone keeps robbing".

Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister and host of the summit, condemned the Russian Federation comments.

Trump arrived 17 minutes after the planned 8am start time and after Trudeau's opening remarks, earning him glares from fellow leaders and heads of worldwide institutions.

Putin indicated that he did not like "a lot" of the USA authorities' decisions but praised Trump for his consistency.

"If you have a strategy, do not explain your strategy before the meeting - because if you are explaining your strategy before the meeting, you are losing your strategy", European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told reporters.

Trump called the summit a "one time shot" for Kim, but expressed optimism at the beginning of talks with the North Korean regime.
