A crocodile killed a pastor during an 80-person baptism ceremony at a lake in southern Ethiopia.

It clamped its jaws around the pastor, biting his legs, back and hands.

Cape Town - A routine baptism ceremony went horribly awry after a crocodile grabbed hold of the pastor conducting the ceremony in Ethiopia's Arba Minch Town, reports the BBC.

An Israeli conservationist did not think any crocodiles would dare attack his canoe when he took it out on the Ethiopia's Omo River in 2014, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Bystanders used fishing nets to prevent the animal from dragging the pastor's body farther into the water.

"He baptised the first person and he passed on to another one", said eyewitness Ketema Kairo.

'All of a sudden, a crocodile jumped out of the lake and grabbed the pastor'.

Ethiopian news outlet Borkena.com said members of the church were left devastated by the gruesome attack and reported it widely on social media.

The reptiles can grow to be up to six metres long and weigh as much as one tonne.

Crocodile attacks are common in Africa, the paper reported, with numerous victims being women washing clothes.
