Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has backed Gareth Southgate's England team to challenge for the World Cup this summer in Russia. The former Chelsea midfielder was left impressed by England's performance in their 2-1 win over the Super Eagles on Saturday night at Wembley.

The Everton keeper, 24, was in goal as England beat Nigeria 2-1 in their first warm-up match at Wembley on Saturday.

England were comfortably the better team and looked far superior to their opponents.

14 May was set as deadline for participating member associations to release a list of 30 players, which Nigeria also complied with.

"Second half they scored and it puts the pressure on but we got back into it an kept the ball and came back well".

Southgate said England had failed to work out how the visitors had changed their approach at halftime, something that might cost them dearly if repeated in Russian Federation.

Gary Cahill powered home the opener on seven minutes before Harry Kane fired home with 39 minutes on the clock.

England boss Southgate said: "There was a bit of a statement with the selection of Jordan".

In the the first two minutes of the second half, the Green and White men were fired up as Alex Iwobi who started a move completed the finished after Odion Ighalo's strike initially hit the upright.

"So, we have to continue to play like this".

He said: "It is to be expected but at the same time it would be nice if it was positive". "I do think because the youthfulness, the energy in this team you can feel it". In the first half when we had chances, we can't lose our confidence because a team changed their formation'.

"For some reason, not a lot of us or not a lot of us believe in it".

After facing Nigeria, England go up against Costa Rica at Elland Road on Thursday - their final official warm up match before travelling to Russian Federation.
