Valve removes controversial school-shooting simulator from Steam

  • The Active Shooter game has been removed from Steam after received an angry blacklash

Seattle-area gaming company Valve removed a game developer from its website after online outrage over a video game depicting a school shooting.

The game, where players can play as a school shooter, was facing a wave of criticism ahead of its June release.

"Ata is a troll, with a history of customer abuse, publishing copyrighted material, and user review manipulation", the statement continued.

This isn't the first time that Berdiyev has faced consequences on the platform, as Valve has removed the creator from Steam when he was previously operating under '[bc] Interactive" and "Elusive Team'.

In the end, Valve avoided the argument while still managing to pull Active Shooter by focusing on the developer's past infractions and previous ban under a different name.

An upcoming computer video game that would let players re-create school shootings by stalking school hallways and racking up kills has been condemned as insensitive and inappropriate by the parents of students who were killed during the school massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High.

The game included a box on the screen that shows how many police officers and civilians have been killed. They also said that he had a bad history on Steam.

An online petition by the activist group Change.org urging the game distributor not to launch the game drew almost 200,000 signatures.

On Tuesday the game was removed from the gaming site and on Wednesday Steam provided a statement to Buzzfeed blaming the game on a troll with Russian ties.

Valve is a privately held company which has developed popular games such as Dota 2 and Half-Life.

Players could either opt to be the school killer, an innocent student, or the SWAT member responsible for taking down the mass killer. If nothing else, Active Shooter is in poor taste, arriving when emotions are still raw over recent events. "We can't expect those people to be the only ones who stand up against things like this".

Robinett started the Change.org petition calling on Valve Corporation to ban the game. That process takes between one to five days, Valve says, and makes sure the game is working and "not doing anything harmful".

Valve also promised to have a "broader conversation" on its content policies, and it will be interesting to see what the company has to say.
