Ricciardo overcomes power issue to prevail in Monaco

Finn Kimi Raikkonen, in the second Ferrari, started and finished fourth.
It was his first Monaco victory, his second this season and the seventh of his career, but a landmark feat heralded by his team boss Christian Horner. The second Red Bull of Max Verstappen used a similar strategy to go from last on the grid to ninth at the finish, but he will still be ruing his accident in final practice, which damaged his auto beyond fix ahead of qualifying and forced him to start from the back of the grid.
"I don't know how you did that".
"I spoke to Prince Albert and said that maybe we should make it longer", he said.
"I had the DRS a couple of times but obviously the track makes it quite hard, which is a bonus if you are ahead; but with all the problems he had, he was still quicker than us". I think I did everything [in the race] with a certain margin.
"We were just cruising around from lap six, maybe, literally cruising".
His teammate complained of transmission problems, specifically downshift issues and rear-end lockup between second and third, and though no radio messages were heard at the time, Ricciardo later revealed he too had transmission problems and was driving with "just six gears" of his eight according to a post-race interview. "And it feels good".
Lewis Hamilton leads the driver's championship on 110 points, with Vettel and Ricciardo in second and third.
To combat this Ricciardo shifted the brake bias of his Red Bull forward by "6-7%", three times as much as might be shifted during a normal race, and employed more lift-and-cost into corners. Surprisingly, or not, this was Red Bull Racing's second pole position in this hybrid-turbo era (2014 onward); the last one being Ricciardo's pole in Monaco in 2016. "But we won Monaco", he said, laughing. Daniel had the answer at all times.
"At the beginning it's kind of a feeler then you've got to back off massively particularly for us, more hardcore for us as we were struggling with our tyres".
There is only Ferrari and Mercedes he could consider - but it is unlikely he is coming here. The Red Bull Racing prodigy, who has committed 6 errors out of 6 races this season, started last after a crash in Free Practice 3 that made his vehicle irreparable for qualifying.
However, Hamilton doesn't see Ricciardo leaving Red Bull anytime soon.
The next race on the calendar is the Canadian Grand Prix on June 10.
"If at some stage Red Bull get an engine [closer in performance to Mercedes and Ferrari], they are going to be even closer to us". I don't know. Monaco is an excellent track but maybe we need two races here.
"Will it get better?"
The incident left debris scattered across the braking zone, but the marshals were able to clear the pieces of carbon fibre under a virtual safety vehicle, meaning a full safety auto - which would have allowed Vettel to close on the back of Ricciardo - was not required.
The Dutch driver made the most of his vehicle advantage in the Principality, running a long first stint on the ultrasoft tyres before switching to the faster hypersofts for the closing stages.
