Michael Cohen's business partner may flip under plea deal

  • Trump Lawyer Michael Cohen Paid $400,000 by Ukraine to Set Up Talks With White House

A NY federal judge has postponed to next week a hearing in the case brought by President Donald Trump's longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen to limit prosecutors' review of documents seized from his home and office.

Freidman was described as Cohen's "significant business partner" in a New York Times article Tuesday that broke the news that Freidman was cooperating with state and federal investigators in order to avoid the prospect of decades in jail for various tax fraud charges.

Freidman pleaded guilty Tuesday to pocketing $5 million in passenger fees that were supposed to fund public transportation.

Cohen's attorney, Stephen Ryan, did not immediately respond to questions about Friedman's plea, but in a Thursday morning Tweet, Cohen sought to distance himself from Friedman.

The broadened scope of Mr. Freidman's cooperation may prove worrisome not only to Mr. Cohen, who is the target of a continuing federal investigation, but also Mr. Trump.

Cohen's fee was for getting Poroshenko more than just an embarrassingly brief few minutes of small talk and a handshake, the senior official said. The person wasn't authorized to publicly discuss it and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

At that time, Lynch ordered Freidman held on $500,000 bail on a five-count indictment accusing him and Dumitru of first-degree criminal tax fraud and first-degree grand larceny, which carried the possibility of 81/3 to 25 years in prison.

According to people with knowledge of his pitches, Cohen said he had the ultimate access to President Trump, while Lewandowski wouldn't be able to get things done.

"The Taxi King admitted that he built his empire by stealing from New Yorkers", New York State Attorney General Barbara Underwood said.

Michael Volkov, a defense attorney at The Volkov Law Group, sounded a grim note on Cohen's legal prospects after the deal had been struck.

It suggests that Cohen broke a United States law requiring people to register as lobbyists for foreign governments.

Giuliani, who met with Poroshenko in Ukraine late a year ago, said he did not know anything of such payments to Cohen and said he was still getting caught up on the story. One of Michael Cohen's business partners, a Russian kingpin in the incredibly corrupt NYC taxi business, has reached a plea deal to cooperate in Cohen's prosecution, in exchange for a much lighter sentence than he would otherwise have received. You basically couldn't be involved in the taxi business in New York City without dealing with "Gene" Freidman.

Freidman's lawyer, Patrick Egan, declined to comment on the Times report.

"I disagree and, if I did, I never knew it", he said.
