In Bend's case, the Census Bureau believes Bend has about 9 percent more residents than PSU figured.

The Lone Star State also dominated the 15 most-populated US cities as of July 2017, with an estimated 2.3 million residents in Houston, which ranked fourth overall behind New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago.

From 2016 to 2017, San Antonio's population grew by 24,408 people, more than any city in the United States, according to numbers released Thursday by the Census Bureau.

The gain here was more than those reported for Irvine, Calif., and Henderson, Nev.; and just behind those recorded for Atlanta, San Diego and Austin, Texas.

The U.S. Census Bureau issued its new population estimates for U.S. cities and towns Wednesday night, and it estimated Bend had grown to 94,520 residents as of last July 1.

The estimate ranks Bend as 12th among the fastest growing cities across the country a year ago, with populations of 50,000 or more.

In terms of percentage growth, three Texas cities topped the list, with Frisco's population jumping by 8.2 percent, New Braunfels seeing an 8 percent gain and Pflugerville growing by 6.5 percent.

The gains in Hempstead Town held up over a longer period as well, with a Newsday online database of census estimates from 2010 to 2017 showing the town's population increased by almost 14,000, or 1.8 percent, during the seven-year span. That includes Aurora and Carbondale, which each saw a population drop of fewer than 300 people, while Rockford's and Springfield's head counts fell by fewer than 1,000.

That increase was down from the previous year, when Phoenix led the nation by adding 32,113 people.

The last time a Texas city had the largest population surge was in 2006, when Houston - a major destination for Katrina evacuees - added about 43,000 people. Excluding Seattle, the county grew by just about 15,000 people a year ago, for a growth rate of 1 percent.

The county's rate of growth trailed the 49-percent rate of Williams County of North Dakota as the top-ranked county in the country.

In July 2010, Clinton had 26,885 people.

On average, San Antonio grew by 66 people a day between 2016 and 2017, pushing the city over the 1.5 million population mark for the first time. L.A., by the way, was the nation's No. 2 city for overall population behind New York City. Fort Worth passed Indianapolis to become the 15th largest city in the nation.

"It's gone up and down a bit, but that's where we're headed", Frey said.

What's certain is that Chicago and the state have seen its population fall in recent years, and though it's been a trickle, experts are trying to figure out why. "Increasingly in the suburbs, the population is aging", he said. The Chicago metropolitan area, which extends from the city to its suburbs and into parts of IN and Wisconsin, also has lost residents for three consecutive years.
