  • The victor was crowned during a live two-hour finale on Monday

Iowa native Maddie Poppe has won "American Idol". The win was made slightly bittersweet by the announcement just minutes earlier that Caleb Lee Hutchinson andPoppe were dating. Only time will tell if their romance can survive Maddie winning the very first revival season of American Idol and therefore winning herself a notable place in American Idol history. The popular and catchy tune is featured on the 52-year-old's fourth studio album, True Believers, which was released back in 2013.

American Idol has crowned its very first victor, Maddie Poppe, and no one is more thrilled for her than runner-up, Caleb Lee Hutchinson.

Darius Rucker and Lady Antebellum's co-headlining Summer Plays On Tour kicks off in July with special guest Russell Dickerson. The two finalists surprised everyone when they suddenly announced that they were a couple right before Ryan Seacrest declared the victor.

Maddie told ET she was hoping to wind up in the finale two with Caleb. I am honored to know you and even more honored to call you mine. "I've known her since the beginning of Hollywood Week, and you know, she, uh - she actually happens to be my girlfriend". Don't forget about me.

'You can't just write this stuff, ' she told People.

The evening got even more cozy when the two performed Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version of "Over the Rainbow" and "What A Wonderful World" together, and received a surprise trip to a resort in Hawaii. "I really did because my music is not mainstream, and so to know that I pulled this off just doing what I love and I didn't have to change myself is pretty incredible".

Poppe added, referencing the large gold card that Seacrest was holding, "I saw the big 'Maddie Poppe, ' and I was like, well, hopefully it doesn't say this is the person who's getting cut".

Katy Perry said you can't make up this happy ending. Although the victor will receive a new record contract and tons of notoriety, a 2010 New York Times report said that the record contract "potentially binds the artist to the show's producers for up to seven years, roughly twice as long as a typical first contract".
