  • US vows 'strongest sanctions in history' on Iran

He set out conditions for any new deal with Iran, including the withdrawal of its forces from Syria and an end to its support for rebels in Yemen. "It's on the table, we're not going to rule out anything necessary in order to address Iran", Manning said.

The new USA demands are so intrusive and broad that Iran's rejection of them seemed all but certain even before Rouhani spoke. "The sting of sanctions will be painful", Pompeo said during the speech at the conservative D.C. -based think tank Heritage Foundation.

If Iran agrees to those demands, he said, the United States would lift sanctions, re-establish diplomatic relations with Tehran and provide it access to technology.

Mr Pompeo said that if Iran were to abide by the stricter terms, including ending its ballistic missile programme and its interventions in regional conflicts from Yemen to Syria, the United States would lift its sanctions. The Europeans are searching for ways to protect their own companies from sanctions that Trump reimposed, though some big multinational firms already were avoiding business in Iran due to the uncertainty over the deal's fate.

Mr Pompeo did say that the USA would be willing to change its approach and lift the sanctions, if it sees Iran revise its policies.

"He will not live forever, nor will the Iranian people abide the rigid rule of tyrants forever", Pompeo said. That is their decision to make. Moreover, having pulled out of the JCPOA without our allies, it is far from clear why they would cooperate with us on more ambitious undertakings. The secretary said the administration ultimately wants a ratified treaty.

The Trump Administration will more aggressively confront Iranian operatives and their allies in Lebanon's Hezbollah operating around the world, Pompeo vowed.

"We couldn't get it done". The worldwide community, including top USA officials, have said Tehran had been in compliance. The new US strategy does, however, reflect the ambitions of key USA allies in the Middle East, notably Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Also responding to Pompeo, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif accused the United States of a "regression to old habits", saying Washington's diplomatic efforts were a "sham". Most recently, the U.S. made a decision to exit the Iran nuclear accord and impose sanctions on Tehran.

The older American sanctions prohibited nearly all trade with Iran, making some exceptions only for activity "intended to benefit the Iranian people" such as the export of medical and agricultural equipment. Tehran has, CNBC noted, refused to back down, asking the European Union to consider bypassing the American financial system.

According to Pompeo, President Trump is willing to negotiate a new deal, but that is not the primary objective. It just said quit doing as much as you were. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has slammed the speech, saying that Tehran would continue its path.

Pompeo reiterated those threats today. If the Iranians wanted a peaceful nuclear program, he added, "they would not hide their secret archives for making nuclear weapons".

"US diplomacy sham is merely a regression to old habits: imprisoned by delusions & failed policies-dictated by corrupt Special Interest-it repeats the same wrong choices and will thus reap the same ill rewards".

As tensions with the Europeans increase, Pompeo called for us allies around the world to support the administration's new plan. "I want the Australians, the Bahrainis, the Egyptians, the Indians, the Japanese, the Jordanians, the Kuwaitis, the Omanis, the Qataris, the Saudi Arabians, South Korea, the UAE, and many, many others worldwide to join in this effort against the Islamic Republic of Iran", Pompeo said.
