Both players who were of Turkish descent were born in Germany and they preferred the German national team to play for.

The pictures, taken in London on Sunday and published by Erdogan's ruling AK Party, show Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan standing next to the president, all beaming, and giving him shirts from their English clubs - Arsenal and Manchester City.

Free speech protesters and Kurdish campaigners rallied outside Downing Street on Tuesday ahead of a meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Theresa May.

However, the DFB was far from impressed with their decision to pose for pictures with Erdogan, whose presidency has repeatedly come under scrutiny for alleged violations of human rights.

Questioning the commitment of its players, DFB president Reinhard Grindel said, "Football and the DFB defend values which are not sufficiently respected by Mr Erdogan".

The two soccer stars also presented the Turkish President their signed jerseys. "That's why it's not good our national team players allowed themselves to be misused for his election campaign maneuvers". "In doing that, our players have certainly not helped the DFB's work on integration", he added. "When you play for Germany you represent German values", Loew said at a news conference to name his provisional squad for the World Cup in Russian Federation. However, he said: "They were unaware of the symbolism of these pictures, but we can not endorse it, and we will discuss the matter with the players".

The World Cup begins next month in Russian Federation, and both Germans will likely start for the defending champions.

"The planning horizon over four years is ideal, I'd like to think, especially because there might be some changes in the squad after the 2018 World Cup", Low said upon unveiling his preliminary squad, as reported by ESPN.
