Putin was among the first foreign leaders to congratulate Pashinyan, who had vowed to pursue friendly relations with Russian Federation.

Vladimir Putin in turn said that Armenia is a strategic partner of Russian Federation and one of its most important economic allies, and congratulated Pashinyan on his appointment as prime minister.

"Like before, we are ready to expand and deepen our relations with Armenia in all fields", he said. "I hope that our relations will develop as steadily as has been the case until now and we will be working together just as actively in the worldwide arena, in global organizations ... in the area of security and in the area of economic development".

According to the press statement of the Armenian government, the two PMs have agreed to meet in the near future.

Nikol Pashinian, an opposition figure who spearheaded weeks of nationwide protests, was elected by parliament last week.

Pashinyan said he wanted to inject new energy into developing already close ties between Moscow and Yerevan and thanked Putin for the way the Russian leader had handled the Armenian street protests.

"We have things to discuss, but there are also things that do not need any discussion", said Pashinian. Putin recalled the growth of trade and economic relations between the two countries.

"All conditions have been created for us to live and work in our homeland", the Armenpress news agency quotes him as saying.

"The JCPOA guarantees peace and stability in the region and Armenia has never been -and will never be- a part of any move against Iran", added Pashinyan.

"I do not think that pressure will be applied to Armenia. I think [they will be held] this year", Pashinyan told reporters, Panorama.am reports.

Armenia is under the pressure of its two large Muslim neighbors, Turkey and Azerbaijan, and must lean on the security assistance of Russian Federation. Young fellows of the new PM joint the Cabinet.
