Lewis Hamilton: "I'm Really, Really Happy" With Dominant Victory

Hamilton roared off his marks to retain his lead on the 200mph charge to the opening bend, while Vettel got the jump on Bottas after a gutsy move around the outside of the Mercedes. This opposed to Hamilton and Bottas running on the Super Soft tyre.

While Hamilton reported drizzle on his visor on lap 21, Bottas' pace surged, over 1.2 seconds faster than Vettel. "The best ones are sensitive and fragile", he said. "After five races we have a much better understanding of the auto and what we need to do to get it working but we still have learning to do and still need to add performance to the vehicle throughout the year".

It was mostly status quo for the rest of the race, save for a few battles in the midfield. "This is a good way to start the weekend". "We let him down in Melbourne and that stays in your mind and now he has put these things behind him and had a very good weekend". You saw that it worked out for [Daniel] Ricciardo and Verstappen in Shanghai, I think this is what they were thinking.

"I'm always on the worrying side and we'd been very good in winter testing here and when we went to Melbourne everybody said it was going to be an easy Mercedes one and then we had hard races so I think we were very good today but we need to stay calm and humble", Wolff said.

"I was comfortable but at no point did I feel like I was going to lose it".

"Our understanding of the vehicle and the improvements that we're making are important too".

"Even in the end, with the fresher set, I wasn't able to attack", he added. "I know that sounds weird but today is definitely I think the closest I've been". At the start, Hamilton got a good start and teammate Bottas was slower away.

Mercedes will be optimistic that they are getting to grips wth the issue of putting their tyres in the correct operating window that has seen them struggling for performance thus far.

The next F1 round is the Monaco Grand Prix on May 27.

Mercedes motorsport chief Toto Wolff agreed that Ferrari had been in worse shape for tyre wear, and said it had been a concern for his team too.

The safety vehicle was deployed for six laps here to deal with the debris before Hamilton executed a masterful restart to leave Vettel for dust, and by lap 15, the Brit had already moved 6.5 seconds clear of his rival. Red Bull's Max Verstappen repeated Hamilton's complaint of rain around Turn 12 on lap 24, before dodging Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen, whose power loss replicated that endured by the Finn on Saturday, ending his race-much to the chagrin of his biggest fan, who was a special guest of the Scuderia for this Grand Prix.

Mercedes held firm to their one-stop plan.

Wolff sympathised with his rivals at the Scuderia.

"First, we were not quick enough", said Vettel. "Ferrari did the opposite". However they were hooked up in qualifying and then proved to have the race pace to match, concluding with their first one-two this season.
