  • Kyle Edmund sets up Novak Djokovic tie at the Madrid Open

The 23-year-old from Yorkshire is through to the Madrid Open quarter-finals, his first time at this stage at a Masters level event, after a hugely impressive 6-3, 6-3 win on Thursday over the skilful Belgian.

Monfils forced Nadal to work hard for the first set, but the defending champion took it 6-3.

Earlier this year, Djokovic, now the World No. 12, underwent surgery for a right elbow injury, which has marred his last few seasons.

"Look, there are obvious things that are not working well for me", the 12-times grand slam champion said.

"But I have to keep working on them and pray that - and hope that - my game will get stronger, get better as the matches go the distance". Rafael Nadal, who has had a tremendous rivalry against Djokovic said that he is certain that the Serb will bounce back, very soon.

"One or two points decide really these kind of matches".

Djokovic believes the margins were slim and concludes that "luck was on his side a little bit".

His latest win against Goffin is his second against opponents of this calibre in...

The Briton closed out the first set but a scrappy second, with Edmund hitting 10 unforced errors to Djokovic's three, allowed the former world number one to force a decider.

Djokovic added: "I haven't played a whole bunch of matches". I tried but obviously, yeah, wasn't to be to today. "I try to always remind myself and be grateful of that".

Sentimental support, too, for another veteran Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco, also a leftie but with a heavyweight baseline game that had taken him, at his best, to No7 in the world and through Nadal in a memorable five-set thriller at the 2016 Australian Open.

It's a huge win for Edmund, who now faces another tough test against the eighth seed Goffin.

The top-ranked Nadal, who improved to 18-1 overall on the season, has won 38 of his last 39 matches on his favored clay.

"Obviously new coach (Fredrik Rosengren) and someone I've known for many years". "It was a very solid match in all aspects".

Previously in-form fourth seed Juan Martin Del Potro suffered a shock 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) defeat by Dusan Lajovic, handing the Serbian the first win over a top-ten player of his career. It's just a really good win for me. "It's great. I couldn't ask for a better start".

Halep will now play Pliskova's twin sister Karolina for a place in the last four.

Lopez turns 37 in September, making him the oldest man in the draw, but the big single-handed leftie with the old-fashioned serve and volley game has never got beyond the quarters of his home tournament.

Meanwhile, second-seed Caroline Wozniacki was taken to three sets by Ashleigh Barty but eventually prevailed 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
