Donald Trump's Central Intelligence Agency pick Gina Haspel promises no more harsh interrogation program

  • John McCain who was tortured while being held prisoner in North Vietnam is battling brain cancer and is unlikely to vote on Haspel's nomination but is a widely-respected elder statesman in US politics whose views carry significant weight

He also complained that some of her responses during Wednesday's confirmation hearing were "narrowly crafted and evasive".

A confirmation of Haspel would be interpreted overseas as implicit approval of a program of harsh detention and interrogation, Ford said.

"I would not allow CIA to undertake activity that I thought was immoral, even if it was technically legal", said Haspel, a 33-year veteran of the agency. Yet, that wasn't satisfactory. Yet, in all, her hearing was not awful.

On the eve of CIA director nominee Gina Haspel's Senate hearing, the "mastermind" behind the 9/11 terror attacks has asked to share information about her with the Intelligence Committee. Ron Wyden, a Democrat, told Haspel during her confirmation hearing on Wednesday. Whatever Haspel herself believes, she would be serving a president who has said he would resume waterboarding and worse, if possible.

Some Democrats and Sen.

"They were the highest lawyers in the land, including the attorney general".

King caucuses with the Democrats. Mark Warner of Virginia and Dianne Feinstein of California, said some of her answers lacked clarity. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico. If the liberal questioners had followed their own mindset about how moral questions are situational, they would not have criticized Haspel for trying to explain her answer beyond a simple yes or no.

Manchin's endorsement puts her in solid position to be confirmed, if all other Republicans hold together in support.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins of ME notes that the president as a candidate repeatedly expressed his support for waterboarding.

The candidate on a post of the head of the CIA Gina Haspel promised not to use torture during interrogations of detainees. She also said the program as a whole produced "valuable information" that helped disrupt more plots after the September 11, 2011 attacks, though would not say whether that was a result of waterboarding and other severe techniques.

Haspel, now the deputy Central Intelligence Agency director, was chief of a base at a black-site prison in Thailand in 2002, where controversial interrogation techniques were used on detainees - including waterboarding.

More than 100 former USA ambassadors have sent a letter to the Senate opposing Ms Haspel's appointment. "The bipartisan support she has received by leaders of our national security infrastructure reflect the deep respect for her service to America and the proven leadership she will provide in defending our nation", Brian O. Walsh of America First Policies said in a statement.

Bayh, a Democrat from IN, and Chambliss, a Republican from Georgia, served on the Senate intelligence committee during Haspel's tenure at the CIA. In all, she has over 50 top intelligence officials backing her nomination. Again, would there be such opposition if Obama were in office, or any Democrat for that matter?

But Haspel was reportedly in charge of the site the following month when Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri - an al-Qaida suspect accused of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole - was waterboarded three times. To make matters more complicated, this chapter of her professional life has been subject to conflicting media reports, some of which have been subsequently disputed or retracted.

Yeah, leaving out that Haspel did things behind the scenes that allowed us to live, it's always amusing to see feminists cannibalize their own narrative about women's advancement unless they're part of or seem to be part of a political movement or figure with whom they despise.

When she faces the Senate hearing, her fate hinges on how well she fields tough questions from senators.
