But at a press conference on Tuesday, the 2018 Cannes jury downplayed the impact today's headlines would have on their pick for the Palme d'Or. And much of the spotlight on opening day belonged to Blanchett.

"It's a level playing field, isn't it?" She admitted that she would want to see more women directors but the change can't happen overnight. Blanchett said. "Absolutely." She added that she "hoped" would happen in the future. "We will deal with we have in hand", she elaborated further.

As a jury, though, Blanchett said, "We are dealing with what we have this year, and our role in the next nearly two weeks is to deal with what is in front of us. I said we really need gender and racial parity [in the jury]", revealed Blanchett. I am humbled by the privilege and responsibility of presiding over this year's jury.

Although she has never won anything at Cannes, her performance in "Carol", where she played one half of a couple of illicit lesbian lovers, earned her rave reviews in 2014.

"This is recognition for my work as a filmmaker, not for my work as a female filmmaker", says Labaki.

Morning press shows ahead of Competition films several hours ahead of their red-carpet galas have been done away with while protracted post-screening embargoes have been imposed on reviews of films that screen late night. They are there because of the quality of their work.

The festival this year even altered its sacred schedule to eliminate morning press screenings ahead of premieres - a strategic switch meant to blunt the effect of press-corps boos marring film premieres, a practice that had emerged as a kind of blood sport at Cannes.

In a formal statement issued hours later, the festival said: "Because the time has come to speak out, and because there must be zero tolerance with sexual harassment or abuse of any kind, the Festival de Cannes, in partnership with the French Ministry of Gender Equality, has chose to take a firm approach to preventing sexual harassment, and to stand shoulder to shoulder with victims". Chastain, while not connected with any film playing at the festival this year, will in a way still be influencing the conversation.

Festival director Thierry Fremaux told reporters Monday that it was ironic that both Iran and Russian Federation should be "punishing the directors when neither film is political".

Fremaux asserted that the festival is doing its best to improve the gender ratio in its selections and committees.

Others have pressured Cannes to confront its role in the scandal.

An Italian actress identified as Asia Argento made claims that the movie mogul, raped her in his luxury hotel suit when she was 21. Weinstein has denied any nonconsensual sex. Blanchett asked. "Not specifically". Ms. Blanchett was quick to point out that being attractive and intelligent is not mutually exclusive. "This is by its very nature a glamorous, fantastic, spectacular festival".

On the Netflix debate, DuVernay only referenced the situation vaguely.

"Cinema is voice", DuVernay said. "It has been irritating to me to think that I'm in Cannes because I'm a woman filmmaker and that now, with everything that's happening, the world has chose to put females in the spotlight". It was film that did that.

Before the festival began, controversy dominated the Cannes landscape.

The Cannes Film Festival has turned its guns on the "ugliness" of selfie-takers and the rise of social media critics.

Since then, both sides have expressed some regret over the high-profile disagreement. Two filmmakers in competition - Iran's Jafar Panahi and Russia's Kirill Serebrennikov_ are living under house arrest in their home countries. Sergei Loznitsa, another big name in the global film scene leads the Un Certain Regard section where Nandita Das' MANTO will also be screened. "We're all going into this process with a genuinely open mind". His film - "The House That Jack Built" - stars Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman. Sonam Kapoor-Ahuja will be at the French Riviera as a newlywed and make heads turn on May 14 and 15.

The new "Star Wars" spin-off, "Solo", is the only Hollywood blockbuster in a slightly less starry line-up than usual.
