Do not quit Iran deal: UN urges Trump

  • UK should stick to nuclear deal despite Israeli claims of Iran ‘lying’- Boris Johnson

Iran remains defiant towards US -led efforts to make changes to the nuclear deal. "Iran will not renegotiate what was agreed years ago and has been implemented. also we will reject any ratification of it", he said in the five-minute video that was uploaded to YouTube.

Netanyahu is a fierce opponent of the nuclear deal, and the timing of his presentation was seen as an effort to strengthen President Donald Trump's case for scrapping the deal, which trades sanctions relief for curbs on Iran's nuclear program.

Trump has threatened to abandon the agreement when it comes up for renewal on May 12, demanding his country's European allies "fix the awful flaws" or he will re-impose sanctions.

"If the United States withdraws from the nuclear deal, then we will not stay in it", Ali Akbar Velayati, foreign policy adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was quoted as saying by the state television website.

Velayati said Iran accepts the nuclear deal as it has been prepared but will not negotiate any changes, according to Iranian state news agency Mehr.

On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed what he said were pages of material that proved Iran had covertly pursued nuclear weapons.

Trump has lambasted the nuclear agreement reached with Iran in July 2015 as the "worst deal ever". "Iran lied on the front end".

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has urged Donald Trump not to walk away from an worldwide deal created to prevent Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.

"I understand the concerns of some countries in relation to the Iranian influence in other countries of the region".

There is a chance Trump might choose to keep the United States in the global pact under which Iran agreed to curb its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief, in part because of "alliance maintenance" with France and to save face for French President Emmanuel Macron, who met Trump last week and urged him to stay in, the source said.

A decision by Trump to end United States sanctions relief would all but sink the agreement and could trigger a backlash by Iran, which could resume its nuclear arms programme or "punish" USA allies in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon, diplomats said.

"I don't know what the U.S. president will decide on the 12th of May", Macron told reporters while on a visit to Australia.

Top aides are not seeking to talk Mr. Trump out of withdrawal because he seems intent on it, a second White House official said.

Under the accord, Tehran agreed to limit its nuclear programme in return for relief from U.S. and other economic sanctions.

The ambassador denied Iran would restart any nuclear weapons production.

Baeidinejad said Tehran was exploring various responses to such a move from the USA including restarting nuclear activities.

Meanwhile, the United Nations atomic watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency rebutted Netanyahu's accusations in a statement on May 1, saying that the 2015 report "stated that the agency had no credible indications of activities in Iran relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device after 2009".
