Damian Collins, chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee in the UK House of Commons, implied on Twitter there is a risk Cambridge Analytica might try to delete data important to the investigation.

The Indian government too has shot-off notices to both Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, confronting them with questions on data breach issue.

"Over the past several months, Cambridge Analytica has been the subject of numerous unfounded accusations and, despite the company's efforts to correct the record, has been vilified for activities that are not only legal, but also widely accepted as a standard component of online advertising in both the political and commercial arenas", the company's statement said.

According to the BBC, the British Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), a regulatory body concerned with privacy and data protection, said it would continue its investigation as well. In addition, Jennifer and Rebekah Mercer, the daughters of businessman Robert Mercer who created and funded Cambridge Analytica, are Emerdata directors.

Julian Wheatland, who announced Cambridge Analytica's closure, is also listed as one of the directors of Emerdata.

UK-based data firm Cambridge Analytica has declared bankruptcy and is shutting down, amid claims that it illegally harvested data from more than 87 million Facebook profiles to target users with political ads.

Cambridge Analytica announced Tuesday that it would cease operations and declare bankruptcy in the United States and United Kingdom after losing customers because of the revelation.

The Cambridge Analytica sign had been removed from the reception area of its London offices on Wednesday. Cambridge Analytica sought information on Facebook to build psychological profiles on a large portion of the U.S. electorate.

The firm had become the center of a maelstrom of controversy over the way it allegedly used Facebook data to manipulate voter opinion ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

The company was able to amass the database quickly with the help of an app that appeared to be a personality test.

After Trump won the White House in 2016, in part with the firm's help, Cambridge Analytica CEO Alexander Nix went to more clients to pitch his services, the Times reported a year ago.

Regardless of its future activities, Facebook's Zuckerberg has repeatedly emphasized that a new Cambridge Analytica could not duplicate its predecessor's controversial actions, as the social networking giant updated its privacy policy to prevent app developers from having access to user data without express consent in 2014.

The firm shut down effective Wednesday and employees have been told to turn in their computers, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier. The app collected data on tens of millions of people and their Facebook friends.
