  • Russian Su-27 fighter jet buzzes U.S. spy plane over Baltic Sea

The Russian Su-27 jet performed a "safe" but "unprofessional" intercept of a US Navy P-8 surveillance plane while flying in worldwide airspace over the Baltic Sea, Fox News reported, citing sources. "The crew of Russia's Sukhoi-27 jet approached the aircraft staying at a safe distance, identified it as a USA strategic bomber B-52 and escorted it for some time".

Before that, in November 2017, the USA military said a Russian fighter jet flew within 50 feet of a Navy reconnaissance plane, causing the aircraft to tilt 15 degrees from the resulting turbulence. Zach Harrell, a spokesman for US Naval Forces Europe, told was questioned about it this afternoon.

A Russian jet flew within 5 feet of a Navy plane in a separate incident in January.

The interaction lasted approximately two hours and 40 minutes, according to the statement from the Navy's 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy.

Last Amateur interception of US Navy aircraft Russian aircraft occurred in January, when the su-27 flew within five feet from the EP-3. In that instance, the Su-27 crossed in front of the nose of the EP-3, forcing it to take evasive action to avoid a collision. Su-27 approached theP-8 at a distance of about 6 meters - such interception is considered to be safe, but unprofessional. In their statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense went so far as to suggest that Russian flying was causing "depression and phobias" among their American counterparts.
