  • Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane

10 players made the shortlist for the Football Writers' Association Player of the Year and one of them plays for Burnley.

The two prestigious honors recognize Salah's remarkable first campaign at Anfield that has seen him net 43 goals in just 48 appearances in all competitions.

Belgium worldwide De Bruyne had been considered the favourite for both awards for much of the season, but Salah's consistent and remarkable goal-scoring form has just given him the edge, winning by 20 votes. The Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane was third.

Salah joined Liverpool from Roma in a £34m deal last summer and his goals have taken Liverpool to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The Egyptian who was last month crowned the Premier League's Players' Player of the Year, becomes the first African victor of the FWA accolade, which has been awarded since 1948.

Over 400 journalists cast their votes for the top Premier League player in 2017/18, yet less than 20 votes seperated the top pair.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has added another award to his collection, after becoming the first African player to be named the Football Writers' Association Player of the Year.

The 25-year-old is the first African player to win the FWA award which began in 1948.

FWA Chairman Patrick Barclay explained to Sky Sports News that the result was very close: "You judge a victory against the opposition and in particular from Kevin De Bruyne this season, it has been as good as it gets".

The other players to receive votes were Sergio Aguero, Christian Eriksen, Roberto Firmino, David Silva, Raheem Sterling, Jan Vertonghen and Nick Pope. But Mo Salah is the worthiest of winners.
