After the attack on the church, the herdsmen proceeded to shoot residents in the area and set fire to around 50 homes, according to survivor Peter Iorver, whose stepmother had been a victim.

At least 18 people, including two priests, were killed after suspected herdsmen carried out an attack on a church in Nigeria's Benue state.

He said the people who were already displaced were taken refuge in African Church and LGEA primary School, Mondo.

Richard Nyajo, Chairman of the council confirmed the incident. "These people are engaged in unconventional warfare and sheer killings", he said.

Nigerian groups, including the Benue Valley Professional Network, called for an end to the violence, which has seen hundreds of Christians, many of them farm-owners and villagers, killed since the start of the year.

"They attacked the venue of a burial ceremony and also attacked the church where the two reverend fathers were holding mass", Owoseni said, as reported by Agence France Presse (AFP).

U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., chair of the House Subcommittee on Africa, also decried the violence.

A survivor, Mrs Bridget Ugbuusu, said the attackers were armed with sophisticated weapons.

Mrs Ugbuusu, who is at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, slumped on hearing that her children, was killed.

Christians in Nigeria plan a nationwide protest on Sunday (April 29) against attacks on Christian communities. We are already at a breaking point and a state of anomie is nearly here. "All affected victims are members of NKST [Universal Reformed Christian Church, or Nongu u Kristu u i Ser u sha Tar] church, and the Roman Catholic Church in the affected communities". It urged "the Federal Government and security agencies to stop the unending killings and bloodshed in the country".

"Christians are to carry placards with inscriptions meant to address issues about sustained killings, attacks and destruction of their property in Nigeria".

"The inscriptions on placards could read, "Enough of bloodshed in Nigeria, ' 'Enough of unlawful killings in the country", 'FG, Release Leah Sharibu from the bondage, ' 'FG, Stop Herdsmen Killings, ' CAN rejects FG's poor handling of insecurity, '" Ayokunle said.

The umbrella body of Christians in Nigeria reminded the government of its oath of office and constitutional responsibility of protecting citizens, and charged authorities to quit unnecessary excuses and rise to the occasion.
