  • Brazil legend Rivaldo advises Neymar to leave Paris Saint-Germain

The 26-year-old left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain last year and has excelled in Ligue 1, but compatriot Rivaldo feels he will not be able to reach his full potential in France.

Although he has performed well in his debut season at Parc des Princes, the notable lack of competition in French football means he is unlikely to contest for the Ballon d'Or that he so desperately wants.

It means he is nearly certain to play no further part in PSG's season but that would leave him a month to regain match sharpness ahead of the World Cup, something he said on Tuesday he was confident of doing.

That is the verdict of Barcelona legend Rivaldo. I already said that Neymar may be the best player in the world.

For him to be the best in the world he has to play in Spain.

"If you're going to analyse, there's England, Spain, Italy, Germany - all different - but I'm talking about competitive football".

"It would be hard for him to go back to Barcelona".

'And according to the information that comes to me from nearby people, from everything I've heard lately, I think it's very likely that Neymar will go to Real Madrid.

"I believe he can become the best player in the world there". He is, however, in a race against time to be fit for their opening game against Switzerland on June 17 after suffering a broken foot. The Brazilian is now recovering in his native Brazil and is in a race to make the Brazil squad for the World Cup in Russian Federation in June.

French newspaper L'Equipe said he will return to Paris in "mid-May at the latest" to take part in PSG's end of season celebrations.

Neymar's injury is not expected to put his World Cup participation in doubt. "It's evolving well. I will arrive better than I was before", he added.
