The G7 ministers also discussed the 2015 nuclear deal between six world powers and Iran and efforts to seek a supplemental agreement that would satisfy U.S. President Donald Trump's demand to "fix" what he sees as flaws in the deal, the senior State Department official said.

Freeland and Kono met last month in Tokyo where they affirmed their commitment to keep economic and diplomatic pressure on the DPRK to end its nuclear program.

The gathering is part of the regularly scheduled run-up ministerial meetings ahead of the G7 leaders' June summit in Charlevoix, Que., but its timing is giving foreign ministers a chance to discuss key developments in the North Korea nuclear standoff.

"President Trump is really carrying the water on the North Korea issue".

"We fully agreed that we will never accept a nuclear-armed North Korea", Kono said on the first day of a two-day meeting in Toronto, Canada, suggesting Pyongyang's announcement that it will suspend nuclear tests and long-range missile launches was insufficient to meet the demands of the global community.

With Trump threatening to withdraw the United States if an agreement to revamp the deal can not be reached before the May 12 deadline set by the US leader, Kono said "many ministers" sought "continuous and complete implementation" of the deal.

The military action by the United States, Britain and France came after the alleged use by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime of chemical weapons on Syrian citizens.

On Sunday, Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland was to host all of her G-7 colleagues plus the European Union's representative at a working lunch to discuss the crisis in Russian Federation and Ukraine.

Nevertheless, the official said there remains an openness to talk to Russian Federation over various important issues while still holding Moscow accountable for its destabilizing efforts around the globe.

On Sunday, Freeland also held a meeting with female foreign ministers from non-G7 countries - TV cameras captured her riding her bicycle there from the brunch - and announced Canada would host the world's female foreign ministers for a conference in September.

"Fundamentally, Ukraine is perceived by many, and also by Russia, as a sort of test range for testing Russian nonconventional warfare - hybrid war", Klimkin said while urging the West to take a stronger stand in resisting Kremlin efforts.

Freeland also noted that Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono had had dinner with the female envoys the night before. Foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations began their two-day meeting here on Sunday.

Freeland will be joined on Monday by Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale, who will host G7 ministerial security meeting on terrorism and cyber security.

Acting U.S. Secretary of State John Sullivan's first bilateral meeting in Toronto late Saturday was with Ukraine's Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin.
