The Justice Department's inspector general referred its findings on former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe to the U.S. attorney's office in Washington for possible criminal charges associated with lying to internal investigators, according to a source familiar with the matter.

A report from the watchdog office last week concluded that McCabe had misled investigators and his own boss, then-Director James Comey, about his role in a news media disclosure in October 2016.

It's unclear who has initiated the recommendation or if this is a partisan attack.

The White House this week said the inspector general's report was serious enough that it gave a "great cause" for the Justice Department to take further action - though the determination rests with the department. "If we don't turn that around quickly, we're going to degenerate into a banana republic", Mr. Clevenger said.

Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe arrives to testify before the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S. May 11, 2017.

One memo recounts a February request from Trump, during a private meeting in the Oval Office, that Comey end an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

"I like him very much, as a person", Comey said of McCabe during an interview on CNN, "but sometimes even good people do things that they shouldn't do".

The report was the culmination of a monthslong investigation into McCabe's conduct, mostly around the 2016 United States election. "The inspector general found that he lied, and there are severe consequences in the Justice Department for lying as there should be throughout the government".

"The McCabe scenario illustrates exactly what an organization committed to the truth looks like", Comey explained.

Earlier on Wednesday, Comey confirmed he ordered the opening of the inspector general's investigation that uncovered McCabe's involvement in a leak to The Wall Street Journal for an article published just before the 2016 election.

"Good people lie. I think I'm a good person, where I have lied", Comey said. McCabe has email exchanges supportorting that claim, Michael Bromwich, McCabe's attorney, said.

Beyond the accuracy of McCabe's statements to investigators, the inspector general's report released Friday also took sharp issue with McCabe's move to authorize the media disclosure in the first place. He LIED! LIED! LIED!

Comey's appearance marked the latest stop on his publicity tour and continued public war of words with President Donald Trump. "No collusion, all made up by this den of thieves and lowlifes!"

GRASSLEY: Question two, relatively related: Have you ever authorized someone else at the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports about the Trump investigation or the Clinton investigation? A GoFundMe page raised almost $568,000 for any of McCabe's future legal bills.

Legal experts said Thursday that if the USA attorney's office in Washington were to open a criminal investigation into McCabe and he were charged with a crime, the charge would most likely be lying to the FBI.

McCabe was sacked two days before he was set to retire, at the recommendation of Federal Bureau of Investigation officials.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
