Trump, Brown Tangle Over California State Border Control

  • California rejects Trump’s request for National Guard troops on border

Former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio joins "The Story" to explain the rebellion against Gov. Jerry Brown (D) over his state's sanctuary policy, and things got pretty heated. "Jerry Brown work with the administration and send members of the National Guard to help secure the southern border".

Ronald Vitiello, the Border Patrol's acting deputy commissioner, said talks with California were ongoing and it was possible the state would lend troops for other support roles, including maritime and aerial surveillance, which include counternarcotics work.

President Donald Trump's administration's initial plan for the Guard deployment involves too much immigration-related work, California said, according to The Associated Press, which cited two USA officials with knowledge of the discussions.

Last week, Brown pledged 400 troops to Mr. Trump's border mission on the condition that they have nothing to do with immigration enforcement. "Jerry Brown is trying to back out of the National Guard at the Border, but the people of the State are not happy".

His comments came a day after federal officials said California rejected some proposed duties for the Guard.

Keegan said Homeland Security officials and the Department of Defense have not replied to California's offer for a memorandum outlining the mission's scope.

Trump signed a proclamation directing the Defense Department to assist the Homeland Security Department by providing security on the border, Lengyel said.

"We have a requirement in California which we now understand won't be fulfilled by the Guard there", Vitiello said. "There's enough problems at the border and the interface between our countries that California will have plenty to do - and we're willing to do it". "So, at some point that might come together". CBS reported that Brown said National Guard troops are ready to deploy, as Tump aims to use guardsmen as a means to deter illegal immigration and drug trafficking along the U.S. -Mexico border. Drawing that line will likely prove hard because the Border Patrol combats illegal immigration but also drug smuggling and other crimes.

Brown also vowed to continue the court fight over California laws that vastly limit whom state and local law enforcement agencies can hold, question and transfer at the request of federal immigration authorities. Brown wants them to support law enforcement efforts targeting drugs, gangs and traffickers.

About 250 troops from Arizona, 60 from New Mexico and 650 from Texas have deployed, Lt. Gen. David Hokanson, vice chief of the National Guard, said Monday.

California was declared a sanctuary state in October previous year.

The issue of whether or not to arm National Guard troops at the southern border is particularly sensitive because of the shooting death of an 18-year-old American citizen and goat herder by U.S. Marines who were patrolling for drug smugglers in the Rio Grande Valley in 1997. "With the movement from Texas and Arizona and a few planners from New Mexico, they began to move in and posture their assistance for the CBP", the general said.
