Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his USA counterpart Donald Trump talked about the latest developments in Syria in a phone call Wednesday, according to the Turkish presidency.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday criticized Russia's stance on the future of Syria's Afrin region, saying that Ankara itself would decide the details of returning the area to the Syrian people.

Ankara backs rebel forces seeking Assad's ouster while Moscow remains major ally of the regime in Damascus.

Erdoğan also underlined that Turkey does not intend to give up on its alliance with the US, its strategic relations with Russian Federation on a range of fields from energy to security or working together with Iran to solve regional problems.

The alleged chemical attack in rebel-held Douma near Damascus on April 7 sparked worldwide outrage and warnings of possible military action.

Cavusoglu added by saying that the establishment of a permanent solution such as the Astana and Sochi processes must be put to work effectively and the country must go in elections in a very short time under the U.N.'s roof. He tweeted that Russian Federation should get ready for a strike on Syria after Moscow reportedly vowed to shoot down missiles.

On January 20, Turkey, together with the Free Syrian Army opposition forces, launched Operation Olive Branch in Afrin.

Speaking in Ankara, Mr Erdogan said Turkey would maintain its presence and activities in Syria until the country became safe for everyone.

"He also slammed those who support the "bloody Assad regime" and YPG/PKK terrorist organisations".

Airstrikes on PKK targets in northern Iraq, where the terror group has its main base in the Mount Qandil region, near the Iranian border, have been carried out regularly since July 2015, when the PKK resumed its armed terror campaign.
