The US and North Korea have been holding secret, direct talks to prepare for a summit between American President Donald Trump and Pyongyang's leader Kim Jong-un, according to administration officials.

"The US has confirmed that Kim Jong Un is willing to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula‎", said a second US official.

The CIA has been using intelligence channels while the State Department has been in contact with North Korea by way of the North Korean mission to the United Nations in NY.

While Trump is "looking forward to the summit", the schedule could be late May or even early June, CNN said.

The U.S. President, last month, told South Korean presidential envoys that he accepted Kim's invitation for talks on denuclearization and would hold the talks in May.

They said: "We caution the public to understand that North Korea views its nuclear programme to be sacrosanct and will likely not give it up, no matter what they say during any negotiations".

North Korea is reportedly pushing to hold the talks in its capital, Pyongyang, but it is unclear whether Trump is willing to travel to the city.

She added, "But we're going into this very cautiously, very much knowing that he's looked at the Iran deal, he's seen what he can get and he's seen how he can push through loopholes, and we're not going to let that happen again". A date will be set once the two sides can agree on a location.

Led by former Reconnaissance General Bureau chief Kim Yong-chul, United Front Department has been managing inter-Korean dialogue and North Korea's policy toward the South, including propaganda to the pro-North Korean groups in South Korea.

The Koreas have to also decide how many times Kim and Moon would meet on April 27 and whether parts of the summit would be broadcast on live television.
