Warner joins Smith and Bancroft in accepting sanctions

  • Warner joins Smith and Bancroft in accepting sanctions

The ICC banned Smith for one game and fined him his entire match fee, while Bancroft was fined 75% of his match fee and given three demerit points.

Warner's decision means there will be no need for hearings‚ which could have further damaged CA's reputation.

Last week we also flagged an independent review to examine the wider context of this event.

"Today I lodged the paperwork with Cricket Australia and will be accepting the sanction handed down", he said on Twitter.

The focus is now on former vice-captain David Warner.

To accept the crushing ban handed down showed enormous maturity and ensured Smith is not done with as a leader - because his word means something.

"The culture issue for me is a really interesting thing, because if you wind the clock back a couple of months when Australia won the Ashes, there was no talk about cultural issues or problems whatsoever", said Ponting in New Delhi on Thursday (April 5). At the end of the day, as a former player and former captain, I must say I was quite shocked to see what actually took place on the field.

I have today let Cricket Australia know that I fully accept the sanctions imposed on me.

On Tuesday, the Australian Cricketers' Association called on CA to reconsider the sanctions imposed on the players, saying they did not follow precedent for the type of offence.

Former Australian captain Smith, his deputy Warner and Bancroft were found guilty of tampering with the ball in the Cape Town Test and were subsequently banned by Cricket Australia for 12 and 9 months respectively following an internal enquiry. I would love to put this behind me and will do whatever it takes to earn back the trust of the Australian public.

Smith and Warner have been banned for 12 months, while Bancroft received nine months. They will be confined to grade cricket. Smith, however, will be allowed to assume a leadership role upon serving his suspension. Bancroft, too, won't challenge the sanction. Lawyers would have also argued he had a strong case for a significant downgrade to his punishment. They can try and get away from it all now, as hard as it's going to be for them.

Cricket Australia is now seeking advice from a wide range of qualified individuals, firms, sporting and other organisations who may have conducted similar reviews, or have relevant experience with these sorts of issues.
