Before the auction started, Sotheby's predicted the 227 eclectic lots, covering movies, guitars, paintings, jewelry, watches and sporting memorabilia, would bring between AU$2.6 million and AU$3.7 million.

Sotheby's Australia had estimated the stunt cuirass worn in the 2000 blockbuster would fetch between AU$20,000 and AU$30,000. The items had an 85 percent clearance rate, and all winning bids were topped with a 22 percent commission fee.

A cheerful Crowe made an appearance after Sydney actress and singer Alisa Nasteski sang Happy Birthday and the crowd of bidders and spectators - some in formal wear, others wearing sports team-coloured beanies - gave him three cheers.

A 128-year-old Italian violin that Russell Crowe learned to play in a few months before starring in Master and Commander stole the show among film memorabilia on offer at the Oscar-winning actor's auction.

"G'day folks... Are you having a little bit of fun?" began Crowe, before offering a suggestion to the future owner of the violin.

Crowe suggested, in the tradition of classical instruments, it could be given to a talented young musician such as Ms O'Donnell to be played in halls around the world.

Crowe's brown leather jockstrap, or boxer's protector, from the film "Cinderella Man", estimated to fetch 500 to $600, was sold for a whopping $7,000.

The father-of-two stepped aside as a young violinist played songs from the film on the iconic violin before bidding commenced and the instrument sold for $135,000 AUD or roughly $104,000 Dollars. The costume he wore for that same movie wasn't far behind, sold for $115,000.

Crowe also parted with a collection of artwork, including the 1960 Charles Blackman work "The Suitor", which sold for $360,000. Another buyer paid $65,000 for a mounted Mosasaur skull. The pair sold for $10,000, while Sotheby's had anticipated between $10,000 and $15,000.

"Divorce has its way of making you really examine the things that are essential in life - and the things that are not", Crowe said in a statement announcing the auction, reports the Daily Mail. Its telephone bidder is unknown.
