SoCal's strongest natural disaster since 2014 rattled Los Angeles and Ventura counties on Thursday, swaying buildings in a wide area stretching from Woodland Hills to West Los Angeles to Burbank.

The quake, which struck about 86 miles from Los Angeles around 12:30 p.m., registered a magnitude of 5.3, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was centered about 41 miles southwest of Ventura and 85 miles west of Los Angeles.

Renowned former USGS seismologist Lucy Jones described the Tuesday afternoon temblor as a "moderate" quake, KTLA reported.

Sgt. Eric Buscho, public information officer for the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, says they have received no reports of significant injuries or damage, or an influx of 911 calls, in time since natural disaster struck.

According to the department, during quake mode, firefighters from all 106 neighborhood fire stations survey all 470 square miles in the greater Los Angeles area.

Shaking was reported by residents in areas such as Tarzana, San Dimas, Long Beach, Pomona and Torrance.

"That's part of life in Southern California", Jones said.

A strong natural disaster struck the Channel Islands region on Thursday afternoon and rattled much of Southern California.

"It wasn't super scary, but you could definitely feel there's like rolling underneath", she said.

At the USA TODAY bureau in west Los Angeles, the natural disaster started slowly as a rolling motion.

It tweeted: "A 5.3 quake just occurred 23 east-southeast Santa Rosa Island off the coast of SW #CAwx".

In 2008, the US Geological Survey found there was a 99% chance of a huge quake hitting California, which sits on the "Ring of Fire". "I just want to get myself a T-shirt that says, 'I survived my first natural disaster'". "Magnitude 5.3 is a size that happens on average about once a year in Southern California".

The Tsunami Warning Center reported there is no tsunami danger at this time. They described the temblor as a "strike-slip" event.

Swindle added that crews drove around to assess possible damage Thursday afternoon.

There are not any reports of damage.

"We recognise that the probability of having a large natural disaster goes up".
