South Africa win fourth Test after explosive spell of bowling by Philander

  • South Africa’s Dean Elgar was batting with skipper Faf du Plessis at stumps on Day 3 of the fourth Test vs Australia at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday

The final day of the fourth Test between South Africa and Australia belonged to one man- Vernon Philander.

The success was their first at home against the Australians since 1970, although South Africa have claimed Test series wins on their last three tours Down Under.

A lead that had been 401 accreted to 612, the home side finally declaring on 6 for 344.

"It's very sad", said Hashim Amla.

"Whether I'm going to put my hand up to do that, umm, I'm not sure". Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj also won a leg before decision, when Usman Khawaja played no shot to a ball which spun sharply out of the rough, before Morkel struck again when Joe Burns played across a ball of nearly yorker length. Turns out South Africa had enough about an hour into day two. With Mitchell edging through to Quinton de Kock, Philander brought up his 200th Test wicket in his 54th Test. "As players you do have competitive nature with each other, I played with him at Delhi a year ago and it was nice to share information".

Vernon Philander sent Australia crashing to defeat with a sensational spell of bowling on the fifth day of the fourth Test against Australia at the Wanderers Stadium on Tuesday. They may walk on the same path after crushing defeats on the opposition's soil in 2018, with a complete overhaul on the cards to aim for a revamped culture under a new captain and a fresh coach. "He only deserves the best".

In the meantime, captain Faf du Plessis was hit by a fast Pat Cummins ball that rose sharply, splitting his finger from the nail downward. The regulars returned for the second new ball, and up came du Plessis' century, until Cummins finally caught his edge for 120. When the times are tough, Morne is a nice guy to have around. "The guys were really pumped after that first game". "Whoever comes in next will have big boots to fill".

"A lot of guys (who retire) say they don't miss the game, but I'm definitely going to miss it", he said. Outstanding career for Morne, fitting finale for him. There can't have been too many supporters outside of Australia, who didn't want to see the towering quick go out with a bang.

Morkel himself was typically shy.

The teams landed in Port Elizabeth with the hosts a game down but left with the series levelled - again, not without the wrong reasons playing their part. The final wicket fell to a run-out, with Nathan Lyon failing to beat Aiden Markram's throw from point as he went for a second run off Morkel's bowling.

"I was so hoping that Keshav (Maharaj) could just build the partnership, because I can remember the number of times I have had to bat with people in the 40s and 90s", he sighed. "The last month, the last couple of weeks, have been exceptional", he said. "I wanted to get better every time and I wanted to prove people wrong". "They have made it very, very special". However, he wasn't going to let that affect his last outing.

The visitors started day one at the bottom of the barrel, and they were outplayed over all five days.
