  • Fallin on Thursday signs tax hikes, pay raise

According to CNBC, Oklahoma's teachers annual salary is $42,460, the lowest in the nation. "It's a big pay raise for our teachers".

With Monday being a holiday, the superintendent is now deciding on whether they will suspend classes on Tuesday as well. Almost 100 school districts said the plan was to remain open during the strike and 48 school districts were prepared to close indefinitely.

The President of the Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association said Friday that its members have voted overwhelmingly to stay off the job indefinitely, until lawmakers act to fund education adequately.

This is the first time the Oklahoma Legislature has approved a tax increase in almost three decades, and lawmakers marked the historic occasion by applauding themselves.

In Oklahoma, the tax hikes on cigarettes, fuel, and oil and gas production will be enough for raises averaging about $6,100 annually, as well as funding boosts for schools, support personnel, and state workers. Oklahoma teachers say it's not enough, however, and they still plan to strike next week.

After a historic raise is approved by the Oklahoma House and Senate, almost 200 teachers across the district gathered to discuss their next plan of action.

Aware of the deep opposition among teachers, Priest added, "I know you may be disappointed like me that the legislature left money on the table".

Guymon teachers said they're doing everything they can to ensure quality education of their students. "Oklahoma: we'll see you at 9 a.m. April 2 at the Capitol".

Alberto Morejon, a Stillwater teacher who founded the 72,000-member Facebook group Oklahoma Teacher Walkout - The Time Is Now, says teachers are not ungrateful for the raises lawmakers passed - they simply fell too far short of what teachers say is needed to improve the quality of education for students. The union in Oklahoma was demanding $75 million in new funding for education, and is expected to get $50 million under the plan.

"However, we will poll our staff and if we determine that we can provide a productive, safe and secure learning environment for our students, school may be called back to session early".

"I'm all for paying teachers an additional $5,000, $10,000 - give them $20,000", he said.

Many SPS educators took to the streets with signs Wednesday evening while trying to rally community support for Monday's walkout. The school district will stretch days out to account for lack of instruction during the walkout. The school district also made a decision to cut lunch periods by five minutes.

"I think there's a real possibility of this being longer than a one-day shutdown", said Rick Cobb, superintendent of Mid-Del Schools.

About 125 students from Ryan High School and Junior High walked out in support of the possible teacher walkout next week.

"This is a very historic moment", she said.

Dossett said he's an educator along with the rest of his family. "We must continue to push for more annual funding for our schools to reduce class size and restore more of the 28 percent of funds they cut from education over the last decade". "Our students deserve better", the district wrote in its note.
