VAR confusion could blight World Cup, says Southgate

Referee Deniz Aytekin consults with VAR before awarding a penalty to Italy.

The decision to use VAR at the World Cup has not been an entirely popular one due to mixed results from a series of trials across the world.

FIFA has confirmed VAR will be used at this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation after the International Football Association Board (IFAB) reached a unanimous decision to approve the technology earlier this month, following a two-year trial period.

Chiesa's theatrical fall did not initially impress German referee Deniz Aytekin but after the intervention of VAR he pointed to the spot and, with boos ringing around the stadium, Insigne beat Jack Butland with a flawless spot kick.

The idea that Alli is guaranteed to partner Harry Kane, his Tottenham Hotspur team-mate, at the World Cup was quietly shredded by Southgate.

Southgate was a player in 1998 when Glenn Hoddle chose to leave naming his final World Cup squad until after a trip to La Manga that followed May friendlies against Morocco and Belgium in Casablanca.

"I think that's important because it doesn't come as a huge surprise to anybody".

You could read this innovation one of two ways. German referee Deniz Aytekin went over to a pitch-side monitor to review James Tarkowski's challenge on Federico Chiesa and made a decision to award the spotkick that Insigne converted in the 87th minute to cancel out Jamie Vardy's opener.

"I stood on his foot", Tarkowski said, "but I didn't think a lot of it".

"I prefer "referee's decision is final".

"This is a starting point".

"There have been some strong performances from individuals that have cemented. not their place in the squad, 19 or 20 of those were pretty clear, (but) it's often who are the next ones in if we get a problem in a particular area", said Southgate to Sky Sports.

Former England captain Alan Shearer concurred with Southgate's assessment, saying VAR was becoming a farce.

"If you ignore the "clear and obvious" guidance then you potentially have to review every decision and the game will descend into chaos", he said on Twitter.

The friendly was the England players' last chance to press home their case for a place on the plane, with the provisional 35-man squad due in with Federation Internationale de Football Association on May 14 and the final 23-group required to be finalised by June 4.

The Three Lions conceded a controversial late penalty against Italy on Tuesday night to draw 1-1, extending their unbeaten run to eight matches following the 1-0 win over the Netherlands last Friday.

Prolific Leicester striker Vardy was given a chance to prove himself in the victory over Italy, as he lined up from the start in a front two with Raheem Sterling.

His players also looked comfortable in the 3-5-2 formation Southgate now seems certain to use in Russian Federation. I don't want a repeat of the kind of humiliation we suffered as fans with early and exit in 2014, and the inept garbage seen in 2016.
