On Monday's The Late Show, Colbert picked through the highlights of Daniels's conversation with Anderson Cooper about her alleged affair with President Donald Trump.

The two-time Oscar victor smoked two cigarettes during his interview, while Colbert looked on in apparent bewilderment.

On Monday night, Penn appeared on the "Late Show with Stephen Colbert," and while on camera with the talk show host, the Oscar-winning actor smoked two cigarettes and admitted that he had taken Ambien prior to arriving at the show. Colbert asked, "So in other words, you're still a little bit on the Ambien train right now?"

The two-time Academy Award victor has written "Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff: A Novel", which is described as "a scorching, darkly amusing novel about Bob Honey - a modern American man, entrepreneur, and part-time assassin".

"The greatest thing that an actor can bring to the party is to play well with others - it's the collaboration - and I increasingly don't play well with others", he explained with a smile between puffs.

"I was never disappointed with me", he said. Colbert asked, to which Penn responded, with a smile, "A little bit".

Late show antics from celebrities are nothing new, but people weren't too amused by Penn's cigarette.

Penn said they "have very separate relationships" with their children, 26-year-old Dylan and 24-year-old Hopper.

"I've interviewed you before. I increasingly don't play well with others", the Oscar victor explained of making the jump to author.

Did that clear things up?

Meanwhile, Penn told comedian Marc Maron in a podcast that that he and his ex-wife Robin Wright "don't have a lot of conversation".

Later on, Colbert suggested that Penn maybe stop smoking cigarettes and said to the actor, "Please don't smoke anymore".

Penn praised the students and survivors of the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who organized the March for Our Lives protest in Washington D.C. on Saturday.
