Celtics Have 'Optimism' Kyrie Irving Could Return For Playoffs

  • Kyrie Irving could miss start of playoffs after knee surgery

The Celtics don't expect Kyrie Irving to return to basketball activities for 3-6 weeks after undergoing surgery on his left knee today.

In a release, the Celtics noted, "the wire was originally placed as part of the surgical fix of a fractured patella sustained during the 2015 NBA Finals".

The Celtics said Irving underwent a procedure in which a tension wire was removed from the troublesome knee. The expectation is that the removal of the wire will reduce irritation, but it will keep him out for several weeks. Boston has won three of their last five game without Kyrie Irving in the lineup, and has shown the ability to win big games without key players in the past under Brad Stevens. And Irving is leading the way, averaging 24.4 points and 5.1 assists while shooting 40.8 percent from three-point range. He has played in 60 games.

Boston have clinched a spot in the playoffs, sitting in second place in the Eastern Conference, 4.5 games behind the Toronto Raptors and six games ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
