  • Christine Quinn Calls Cynthia Nixon An 'Unqualified Lesbian' After NY Governor Bid

During her appearance on The View a year ago, she accused Governor Cuomo - who is seeking a third term in office - of "shortchanging the children of NY". "It's a flight of fancy on her part", Quinn said of Nixon's announcement Monday that she would run against on Cuomo in September's Democratic primary. And she seemed to secure the affections of many of Twitter's New Yorkers with multiple references to the thing they hold most dear to their hearts: well-functioning public transportation.

She is also focusing on inequality in the state's education system.

Welcome to a one-party town, where Democratic shootouts frequently happen in lifeboats.

Quinn made the remarks in a New York Post interview the day after Nixon announced she was running.

The first to make her support known was Kristin Davis, the Charlotte York to Cynthia's Miranda Hobbes on the HBO series.

Mr Cuomo was not accused of any wrongdoing.

At the news conference, Cuomo jokingly challenged National Guard members who were assembled around him to a snow-shoveling contest - promising to win. During the campaign, he can point to a slate of accomplishments such as the introduction of a US$15 minimum wage, the launch of paid parental leave in the state and the passage of gun restrictions.

Republican candidate for governor, State Senate Deputy Majority Leader John DeFrancisco says he welcomes Nixon to the race.

Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura Ingalls Wilder in the '70s series, also mounted a run for Congress in MI in 2015. "That's called elections, and that's fine".

With wife Christine Marinoni in the audience at the Bethesda Healing Center, Nixon said she was "honored" to join their ranks.

At the same time, Mr. Cuomo - who is widely believed to harbour presidential ambitions - is dealing with problems of his own.

Nixon did not miss an opportunity to hint at corruption on the state level. How does she plan to spend the next few months?

The contest between Mr. Cuomo and Ms. Nixon comes with a healthy dose of local intrigue.

One New York Democrat isn't a fan of celebrity candidates.

Nixon added, "Our state could thrive if we didn't have a governor determined to sell NY off to the highest bidder".

"I'm proud of what we have achieved, and I am looking forward to working with Ms. Nixon and everyone else who shares my commitment to making government work better for all the people of NY state", Gipson wrote.

The 60-year-old Cuomo had no immediate comment on Nixon's candidacy.

"We need to show the entire country and the world that in the era of Donald Trump's divide and conquer agenda, New Yorkers will come together and we will lead our nation forward", she told a sizeable press contingent and clutch of supporters.

Nixon has her work cut out for her.
