  • Federation Internationale de Football Association gives VAR the green light for 2018 World Cup

GIANNI INFANTINO has expressed his delight after Federation Internationale de Football Association approved of the use of VAR in this summer's World Cup in Russia. In order to help referees make correct decisions at football's biggest spectacle, FIFA has chose to approve the controversial technology in a meeting chaired by FIFA president Gianni Infantino in Bogata.

"We wanted to give the referees tools so they can make better decisions, and in the World Cup some very important decisions are made".

VAR allows officials to review and overturn referee decisions for incidents including goals, penalty awards, red cards and mistaken identity.

The VAR system has been trailed worldwide, but its use in England during FA Cup games has been met with great cynicism.

Infantino said VAR evidently has shown that it reduces human error in the game and it makes football a more transparent sport.

The use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) is one of the most polarizing issues in modern football.

He added: "It's not possible that in 2018 everyone in their living room knows a few seconds after the play whether a referee has made a mistake and the referee doesn't".

The FIFA Council convened on Friday in Colombia, where president Gianni Infantino confirmed the decision had been taken to use the technology.

Mr Dagha wished the Forward Group well and told them to continue with their winning pattern in getting bids for the FIFA World Cup-2018.

"The World Cup is a national priority for our government and that is why it has guaranteed the required investment in our exciting and innovative stadium plans", added Elalamy.

The North African country is up against a joint bid from Canada, Mexico and the United States when world soccer governing body FIFA's member countries decide in Moscow on 13 June who will host the tournament eight years from now.

"If we lose a minute to correct mistakes, I think we have done something good", concluded Infantino. That's why we carried out trials in those 1,000 matches.

Ahead of Friday's meeting, Infantino remained keen to reiterate VAR is a work in progress and while it has clear benefits, is not a fix-all solution to decision making.
