  • The Latest White House pushes back against rumors of exodus

US President Donald Trump has made a decision to remove H.R. McMaster as his National Security Adviser and was actively discussing potential replacements, The Washington Post reported.

Per the Post, Trump has dedicated several meetings this week to speaking with candidates to fill McMaster's position, including Bolton and Keith Kellogg, the chief of staff of the National Security Council.

McMaster also has seemed to be a casualty of a shoot-the-messenger tendency on Trump's part, caught in the middle between the president and the machinations of the other main players on the national security team - Mattis and, until this week, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson - as they sought to keep a lid on actions they didn't want Trump to take, according to White House officials.

"The chief of staff actually spoke to a number of staff this morning, reassuring them that there were no immediate personnel changes at this time", Sanders told reporters.

In Oval Office meetings, McMaster was said to bore and irritate Trump by meticulously laying out the pros and cons on major policy questions.

However, there were indications that the Washington Post report is merely conjecture, with one Fox News reporter saying he's been told that McMaster is not being replaced.

Flynn was sacked within weeks of Trump's inauguration, ostensibly for lying to Vice President Mike Pence about conversations that Flynn had with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergey Kislyak, during the transition.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders insisted there are no staffing changes for now, amid more expected West Wing departures.

Trump was also reportedly considering replacing Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin with Energy Secretary Rick Perry.

Meanwhile, sources told CBS News that Kelly, who has been known to vex the president from time to time, could also be on the way out of the administration. "And I think you want to see change", he said.

However, local media says that the idea of firing the advisor follows months of personal tension between the two figures due to different personalities and styles.

According to the newspaper, Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke have reasons to be anxious about their jobs.

Trump enjoys watching his subordinates compete for his approval, the officials said.
