Tiger Woods finishes his round with share of Valspar lead

Consider that Woods was playing alongside major champions Jordan Spieth and Henrik Stenson and comfortably outscored them both.

The four-time PGA Championship victor was sidelined for the latter part of 2017 having undergone back surgery but has carefully managed his return to action.

"Today was a good day".

Woods' ball was next to a tree with no real room for any kind of follow through.

In this latest outing at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club, he drove the ball an average 308 yards - 32 yards more than Woods - but found the fairway just 46% of the time and hit greens in regulation with less than 40% of his approaches. It remains to be seen whether his 4-under 138 mark following a 70-68 start will hold up as the co-lead all day, but for now Woods will be chased on the weekend by nearly everybody else in the field.

Five years Mickelson's junior, Woods is feeling his way back into the sport after a lengthy absence due to surgery on a persistent back problem.

Woods appeared to still be feeling the shot as he walked toward the green, but hit a brilliant chip to three feet and tapped in for par.

He then sank a 13-footer for birdie at the par-3 eighth.

He gave two shots back with bogeys at Nos.

Woods turned in an all-world par save at the par-4 16th.

He warned spectators to stand back, and sure enough he subsequently wrapped his iron around the trunk, the club bending but not breaking, before flying out of his hand as his left arm also hit the tree.

An upbeat Woods said: "Today was a good day". He then almost aced the par-3 17th before making an easy birdie to get back to red numbers. "Myself, Bubba. There's a few who know how to play the golf course and it fits us", Woods said. "... I liked it right away".

The last time Woods led a tournament at any point was in 2015, and the last time he won one was way back in 2013, when he counted among his wins The Players Championship and two other WGC events, finishing second in the FedEx Cup standings.

Yet to win as a professional on any circuit, Conners emerged as the surprise early clubhouse leader: the Canadian - a tour rookie having progressed off the Web.com Tour - with a best finish of tied-29th in the Farmers Insurance Open, played like a veteran.
