The good news is that, starting today, you can try out the very first Android P developer preview right on your very own device.

As for what's included in this update, Google has included quite a few new goodies. Images for the preview are available here for the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL. Developers will have to manually download and flash this onto their devices to be used for testing and development. We first saw notches on phones like the iPhone X and Essential Phone past year and it looks like many Android device makers plan on embracing the notch with their 2018 smartphones, so adding official support in Android P is a smart move by Google.

Open Mobile API for NFC payments and secure transactions - this brings the GlobalPlatform Open Mobile API to Android, which will let developers access the Secure Element in their apps on supported devices to enable smart-card payments and other secure services. Google is adding in new APIs to help developers figure out how best to accommodate cutouts with the APIs managing the status bar area around the cutout. The HEIF image encoding option will also be supported in Android P, as well.

Indoor positioning with Wi-Fi RTT, or 802.11mc, is also new.

Google is also addressing the difficulties with location tracking that occurs when a phone and its user are indoors by supporting the WiFi RTT protocol.

In Android P, users can expect messaging app notifications to become even more functional than what the current state is. Messaging notifications can now highlight who is sending the message, show images, suggest smart replies, and more. But more importantly, Google is finally preventing idle apps from accessing your camera and microphone with Android P. The API also lets you call a logical or fused camera stream that automatically switches between two or more cameras. Android P will warn users with a dialog when they install an app that targets a platform earlier than Android 4.2 (targetSdkVersion less than 17), and future platform versions will continue to increment that lower bound. Google said more features, tools, and capabilities will be added later in the developer preview, too.

Google has outlined the entire process on its developer website.
