US President Trump hails 'possible progress' with North Korea

  • Trump responds to North Korea talks:

The potential deal was revealed by South Korea Tuesday, who also said the dictator had offered to suspend all missile tests during talks with the U.S.

It's the first time South Korean officials have met with the young North Korean leader in person since he took power after his dictator father's death in late 2011 - and the latest sign that the Koreas are trying to mend ties after a year of repeated North Korean weapons tests and threats of nuclear war. The World is watching and waiting!

Prior to the delegation's departure, South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha told a conference of journalists that Seoul hopes to further explore the possibilities of U.S.

There was no immediate comment from Pyongyang. The last inter-Korean summit was in 2007 when late former president Roh Moo-hyun was in office. Chung will later visit China and Russian Federation, while Suh Hoon, the head of South Korea's spy agency and another member of the delegation, will head to Japan.

North Korea said it is willing to talk to the United States about abandoning its nuclear weapons program if its security can be guaranteed, South Korea's government said Tuesday.

Pence says the US will be firm in its resolve, whatever the direction of any talks with North Korea.

He also said that after 15 months without an ambassador in Seoul, the US needs a high-level American diplomat to ensure the US is leading the discussion on the ground, and that whatever happens next strengthens the trilateral US-Japan-Republic of Korea alliance.

But while this is a new gambit for Kim, it is not new for the North Korean regime.

Officials from South Korea announced new developments from the region as reports have surfaced of North Korea's willingness to discuss nuclear disarmament with the US. "But like I said, hope springs eternal".

North Korea has talked about denuclearization before, but promises fell through before implementation.

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told the Senate Armed Services Committee: "All efforts in the past have failed, and it's simply bought North Korea time to achieve what they want to achieve. It could not have immediately accepted the US demand to denuclearize, but it still needed to change the current phase of confrontation between the North and the U.S.to a dialogue phase", he added.

But in a somewhat encouraging sign, North Korea did agree to freeze any missile tests while talks are going on.

"Whichever direction talks with North Korea go, we will be firm in our resolve", Pence said.

But the president also has signaled a willingness to talk to Kim Jong Un while maintaining denuclearization was a condition for such dialogue.

While there, Chung met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is planning to meet South Korean President Moon Jae-in for a summit along their shared border at the end of April, according to a statement released today.

South Korea and North Korea have also agreed to hold summit talks in late April.

Is Kim Jong Un trying to trick Trump?

What is North Korea reported to have said?

Chung will later visit China and Russian Federation, while Suh Hoon, the head of South Korea's spy agency and another member of the delegation, will head to Japan.
