Landing Cousins Won't be Easy for the Jets

  • Report 4 teams eye Case Keenum ahead of NFL free agency

The Jets plan to be heavy bidders in the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes and they're convinced they can make a better financial offer than any team in the league.

The New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings were some of the first to make their plans known that they would be going after him immediately.

With the Minnesota Vikings seemingly emerging as the early favorite to sign Kirk Cousins when free agency begins, some Denver Broncos fans are worrying that their team is going to be stuck with another sub-par quarterback in 2018. According to a team source, they are aware of the league-wide speculation that Cousins is ticketed for Minnesota and they are taking that threat seriously after some informal, preliminary talks with his camp this week. Of course, free agency opens on March 14. But the source said they are anxious enough that they're taking seriously the "Plans B and C and, if possible, D" that Jets coach Todd Bowles spoke about on Wednesday.

The Vikings finished with a 13-3 record last season and made it to the NFC Championship game before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Minnesota has a talented group of skill players in Adam Thielen, Stefon Diggs, Dalvin Cook and Kyle Rudolph who would benefit from having Cousins command the offense. That means that Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford and Case Keenum will all be hitting the market.

As the start of free-agent season approaches, rumors about quarterbacks available in the market continue to swirl. No one has talked money with the quarterback yet - truly, not just because it's a tampering taboo to have done so - but he and his agent, Mike McCartney, are sharp cookies and his agent has been researching and preparing for this for a long time.

While Cousins would be an astronomically wealthy man should he decide to sign with the Jets, he might have to wait a while before his team becomes serious contenders.

But, due to a devastating knee injury suffered in 2016, Bridgewater has thrown only 2 passes in an National Football League game since. "There's no doubt about it, and it's our job to do the very best we possibly can to figure out who is the right guy, the right fit".

Maybe Larry Fitzgerald bumping into Cousins at the airport planted a seed in Cousins' head. And the Jets have more money and cap space to play around with that any of the other suitors. Unless they end up landing Keenum previously at their price, I suspect the Vikings see this thing out and their presentation is attractive enough to want to see through from Cousins' standpoint as well.
