No mistaking Sharma's identity as one to watch

  • Englishman Ross Fisher got off to a flyer in the third round of the WGC Mexico Championship

Woods followed his 69 in the third round with a 70 on Sunday to finish eight shots back of the top spot on the hard Florida golf course. "Really happy with the way I played today, stuck in there", said Sharma, who is making his debut appearance in the World Golf Championships.

"I got off to a great start", said Sharma.

"Then he just realised (and said) "so sorry, I thought you were media".

Mickelson, who is coming off his most consistent stretch in years, having finished inside the top 10 in his last three starts, has played un-Phil-like golf for the first three days. World No. 1 and defending champion Dustin Johnson shot a 68 to share sixth place, three behind Sharma, who has literally taken the world by storm with a measured and composed performance this week.

Sharma was outside the world's top 450 when he won the Joburg Open in December, and he followed that up with victory in Malaysia last month. Now he's got his sights set on taking it even higher and getting into the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play (top 64) and the Masters (top 50). But there's nervous and then there's nervous.

Even more surreal? He's beating them. "I remember I was so inspired that I didn't sleep, I just went straight to the range and hit balls for two hours", said Sharma.

Oh, and he can putt - as evidenced by his 14-footer for par at the 18th hole on Saturday to secure the most unlikely of 54-hole advantages (as an aside, he also has a vintage fist pump).

Phil Mickelson, 42-time PGA Tour victor, dismissed Sharma as a member of the media when the 21-year-old Indian worked up the courage to introduce himself to the veteran American on the putting green.

Korda, 19, had eight birdies and one bogey as she finished with 15-under 201 heading into the final round at the Sentosa Golf Club. He hit 10 (of 14) fairways and 12 greens in regulation, gaining 1.685 strokes around-the-green, now No. 1 in the latter with a cumulative 4.828.

"I haven't been leading", he added.

American List got into trouble off the tee as his drive on 18 went right and landed in the middle of a small cluster of trees.

Mickelson enjoyed a blemish-free round but did make one error earlier in the day. Mickelson turned and gave her a thumbs-up before almost chipping in for birdie.

Danielle Kang, last year's Singapore victor, parred her last 14 holes and was unable to drain a longer birdie putt on the last to miss out on a playoff as she closed with a 70.

"Having that chance is what we play for", he said. "Tomorrow will be a lot of fun with a lot of good players in the mix".

One can only imagine what those nerves will feel like for Sharma.
