They'll save over $3.7 million and just hold onto $1.5 million in dead money to move on from an aging Stewart and commit to McCaffrey as the new full-time starter.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Carolina Panthers on Wednesday released all-time leading rusher Jonathan Stewart, clearing $3,718,750 from the salary cap.

"He is a great pro, and I appreciate who he is as a young man and thank him for the contribution he made". According to spotrac.com, Stewart earned $47.8 million in his 10 years with Carolina.

The Panthers finished 11-5 last season and have recently cut veterans Kurt Coleman, a safety, and Charles Johnson, a defensive end.

Stewart has spent his entire 10-year National Football League career with the Panthers, who drafted him 13 overall in 2008.

Stewart will not be an easy rusher for the Panthers to replace. Stewart's 58 career touchdowns are No. 2 in Panthers history.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has already promised to return Seattle's offense to the run in 2018, and to up the roster competition at running back. He picked up just 172 yards in his last six regular-season games.

As Sean McVay and the Long Angeles Rams prepare for this weekend's NFL Combine, the team has plenty of other tasks to consider over the next few weeks since the beginning of free agency is right around the corner. At 235 pounds, Stewart has the size Carroll prefers in his backs.

Plus, at this stage in his career, there's a good chance Stewart will hope to be joining a team with a legitimate shot at competing for the Super Bowl, which describes Los Angeles perfectly. But Gore is now 34.

With Norv Turner running Carolina's offense for the 2018 season, Rivera is confident that no matter who the Panthers plug into the scheme, the veteran play-caller will get the most out the running back position. It was not for pretty much the last decade.
