According to Reuters report, along with two other corruption cases, in which Netanyahu is suspected of bribery, the probes announced in February pose a serious threat to the four-term prime minister's political survival.

It's the first time that Mr. Netanyahu, who as Prime Minister also held the Communications portfolio until previous year, is being questioned over the affair, known as Case 4000.

Last month, two Netanyahu confidants were arrested on suspicion of promoting regulation worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the Bezeq telecom company.

The firm has denied wrongdoing.

Elovitch is suspected of being part of a bribery deal, in which Bezeq received regulatory and financial benefits from the Communication Ministry, which Netanyahu headed between 2014 and 2017 in addition to his capacity as prime minister.

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, a member of the ultranationalist party Jewish Home, said that according to the law, Netanyahu can stay in the job through the end of his trial. "Let our people go free from all the corruption surrounding the government and the head of it", said Shimrit Orr, 72, a writer, from Tel Aviv. Police have recommended indicting Mr Netanyahu on corruption charges in two other cases.

In one, known as Case 1000, he is suspected of bribery over gifts, which police say were worth almost $300,000, that he received from wealthy businessmen.

Netanyahu in the video also thanked the "millions of Israeli citizens who express such strong support in me, my wife and my family". The other investigation involves the so-called "Yediot Aharonot affair", in which Netanyahu allegedly reached an agreement with the publisher of a newspaper to receive favorable coverage, in exchange for supporting a bill to weaken a competitor of that paper.

Reports emerged recently that the president of the World Jewish Congress and Netanyahu's long-time ally, Ronald Lauder, had given the premier and his son gifts, including expensive suits.

Netanyahu is now under probe over suspicions that he accepted 1 million euros (about $1.1 million) from accused French fraudster Arnaud Mimran for campaign funds during the 2009 elections.

If investigators discover a promise for favorable coverage, Sarah Netanyahu could be charged. Interrogators reportedly informed her that she was also a suspect in the case.
