Gymnast Aly Raisman Sues US Olympic Committee Over Nassar Abuse

  • A 16-year-old Jacob Moore at the 2015 P&G Championships at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis Indiana. Just months later he claims he was abused by Larry Nassar

In the suit filed Wednesday, but announced Friday morning, in Santa Clara County, California, attorneys representing Raisman say the USOC was "aware, at the highest levels of its organization, that Defendant Nassar had molested Olympic and National Team level gymnasts".

Raisman told CNN that after speaking with an investigator hired by USA Gymnastics in 2015, she felt threatened, and believed she would jeopardize herself if she continued to speak out. "It is my hope that the legal process will hold them accountable and enable the change that is so desperately needed", Raisman said in a statement, per NBC News.

At Nassar's sentencing hearing, Raisman had pointedly asked why representatives from the US Olympic Committee and USA Gymnastics were not present and had not taken action against the doctor sooner, given what they had known of his behavior.

In the lawsuit, Moore's sister, former member of the U.S. National Team Kamerin Moore, also claims Nassar abused her under the guise of medical treatment.

Raisman, who is Jewish and the victor of numerous Olympic medals, including several golds, filed her lawsuit Wednesday in California, saying they "knew or should have known" about abusive patterns Nassar, who is now in prison, The Associated Press reported.

Team USA denied the allegations, claiming they were unaware of the gymnastic doctor's abuse.

Nassar was first sentenced to 60 years in federal prison on child pornography charges last December, before a MI judge handed down a sentence of 40 to 175 years in January. That was after the disgraced former physician had parted ways with USA Gymnastics following a almost 30-year association, but before he was sacked by Michigan State University, where he spent two decades. The 54-year-old also has been sentenced to 40 to 175 years in one MI county and 40 to 125 years in another, both on sexual assault charges.

The lawsuit is the latest development in Raisman's campaign for raising awareness of sexual abuse in sports, which coincides with several other campaigns against sexual misconduct against women. "This is what we're doing to to change.'" USA Gymnastics had said they wanted to work with Raisman to address issues of assault, but they had been criticized for working too slowly.

Nassar is also alleged to have pulled down Jacob Moore's pants and exposed his genitalia to a minor female gymnast who was also present. It also outlined new reforms aimed at protecting its athletes from abuse.

Last month, USOC Board of Directors Chairman Larry Probst said the U.S. Olympic system had "failed" the hundreds of young female athletes who were sexually abused by Nassar.

An Indianapolis Star investigation of USA Gymnastics, begun in 2016, uncovered widespread sexual abuse of athletes and failures to alert authorities by coaches and others.
